Cultural Practices Quick Reference

Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Grass Cutting Height
We recommend that you mow Centipede grass 1 1/2" - 2" high, St. Augustine grass 2" - 2 1/2" high and Bermuda grass 1" - 1 1/2" high. Mowing too high or too short can weaken your lawn's root system causing your lawn to be more susceptible to insects, disease, drought, winter kill, etc.
Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Frequency of Mowing
The general rule of thumb is never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade in one mowing. The frequency will vary from every other week in Winter and slow growing periods to once per week during the faster growing periods of Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Collecting Clippings
Latest research by various universities indicated that, under normal conditions, it's not necessary to collect your grass clippings. This is based on the assumption that you mow your lawn on a frequent basis. If the grass gets too long between mowings, or if certain diseases are present, collecting clippings may be necessary.
Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Sharpening of Mower
To provide that super-manicured appearance, your mower should be sharpened a minimum of three times a year - Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Water
If there are no restrictions on water and if you can water correctly, your lawn will be green all summer. Light, frequent sprinkling and late afternoon watering is not recommended. If you cannot water your lawn during a drought, the lawn will simply go dormant (brown) to protect itself. Then after it receives at least an inch of water, it will green itself up again within one to three weeks.
Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Correct Watering Procedures
If you are able to water during dry spells, set your sprinkler in each location for 1 to 2 hours. Do this weekly or until there is at least an inch of rain. If your time to water and/or water supply is limited, concentrate your efforts on one area, such as the front lawn, and allow the rest of the lawn to go dormant until it rains. Morning watering is always best.
Professional Lawn & Shrub Care Service Power Raking and Dethatching
This should not be done on Centipede grass and St. Augustine grass lawns because these grasses do not have rhizomes and this can kill it by removing it. To remove thatch we recommend: 1) mowing one notch closer and bagging clippings 2) raking hard with a leaf rake 3) core aeration. This should only be done when the grass is brown during the winter.
